Nick Bilton of NYT recently asked Anil Dash on why he thinks people are a "bit insensitive" when leaving comments on blogs and whether blogs should allow anonymous comments:
I think comments can become negative depending on the type of conversation you allow to happen. For example, you’ll rarely see negative comments on a site like Flickr, where they’re discouraged. ..There is a large pool of dedicated detractors who are negative because the New York Times represents something to them, separate from what the story’s about.[custom name="url" value="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/13/one-to-one-anil-dash-of-expert-labs-and-six-apart/?partner=rss&emc=rss"][custom name="t" value="One on One: Anil Dash of Expert Labs"]
Anonymous comments were never inherent to the Web. We originally had to allow people to comment anonymously because we didn’t have the infrastructure, technology or resources to build identity into commenting systems. But today, it can be important to start linking to people’s Twitter or Facebook accounts so that we can apply some consistent identity (even if it’s pseudonymous) to these comments. link.
